Summery:
In "The Great Wall," European mercenaries William Garin and Pero Tovar journey to China in search of gunpowder but are attacked by a mysterious monster. The pair survive and make their way to the Great Wall, where they are captured by the Nameless Order, a secretive military group led by General Shao. The Order exists to defend China from the Tao Tie, alien creatures that attack every sixty years. As the monsters begin their assault a week early, Garin and Tovar prove their worth in battle, saving a fellow soldier and killing two monsters. Their bravery earns them the respect of the Order.

Aided by Ballard, an Englishman imprisoned at the Wall for years, Garin and Tovar initially plan to steal gunpowder and flee. However, Garin becomes involved in the Order’s fight after it’s discovered that magnets may neutralize the Tao Tie, a theory he helps confirm by capturing one of the creatures alive. Tensions rise between the two Europeans as Garin delays their escape to assist in the war effort, while Tovar remains set on fleeing.

Meanwhile, the Tao Tie have tunneled under the Wall, and chaos erupts as the creatures head for the capital. Garin is imprisoned for trying to stop Tovar and Ballard from stealing the gunpowder, but when the creatures invade the capital, he is released to help fight. The Nameless Order devises a plan to kill the Tao Tie queen with explosives. After a harrowing final battle, the queen is killed, and the remaining Tao Tie die with her. In the end, Garin chooses to return home, bringing Tovar with him, despite the offer of great rewards.
