Summery:
In 2035, astronaut Mark Watney is stranded on Mars after a fierce storm forces his crew to evacuate, believing him to be dead. Alone and injured, Watney uses his skills as a botanist to survive, growing food in the harsh Martian environment by cultivating potatoes using the crew’s waste. With no communication with Earth, Watney retrieves the old Pathfinder probe to re-establish contact. NASA eventually realizes he’s alive, but a series of setbacks, including crop failure and a failed resupply mission, threaten his survival.
While NASA works on rescue plans, Watney modifies his rover for a 90-sol journey to the pre-positioned Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV) for Ares IV. As he nears the end of his journey, the crew of his original mission, Ares III, learns of his situation and decides to attempt a risky rescue. With limited fuel and equipment, they return to Mars, using an explosive maneuver to slow their ship. Watney improvises, puncturing his suit to propel himself toward the crew, and he is finally rescued after 561 days alone on the Red Planet.
Upon returning to Earth, Watney becomes a survival instructor for future astronauts. The story closes with the Ares V mission launching, showing the ongoing spirit of exploration and teamwork.
